As the centre of your face, your nose can have a significant impact on your facial symmetry and overall appearance. Everyone’s nose is unique, a mix of our genetics, any past injuries, and how it may change as we age. If you want to make changes to the size and shape of your nose, Rhinoplasty is an option you may consider. This procedure may help adjust the size, shape, or proportion of your nose, in a way that aligns with your personal objectives and what’s medically advisable.
At our Sydney clinic, led by Dr. Tim Papadopoulos, we offer Rhinoplasty procedures for both men and women. It could be a suitable option if you’re wanting to adjust the look of your nose or if you’re facing any breathing difficulties due to its structure.
Opting for Rhinoplasty is a deeply personal choice and it’s not something you “should” do because of societal norms. It’s one of many paths people might choose when it comes to their appearance. We encourage considering all available options, which can include embracing your unique features, or exploring non-surgical treatments.
Our team, headed by Dr. Tim, offers a professional, respectful, and patient-focused approach. We’re committed to helping you make an informed decision that fits your personal objectives and enhances your overall wellbeing.
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can adjust the size, shape, or proportion of your nose, aligning with your personal objectives and what’s medically recommended.
Rhinoplasty can be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve functional aspects such as breathing difficulties caused by the structure of the nose.
The procedure involves modifications to the bone, cartilage, or both, under general or local anaesthesia. Surgery begins with an incision on the inside of the nose (closed procedure) or across the columella (open procedure) to allow Dr. Tim to begin reshaping. Augmentation can require the use of cartilage from another part of the body, but this and other options will be discussed during your consultation.
The surgery duration can vary based on the specific adjustments being made.
It’s important to understand that each person’s nose, face, and desired results are unique, so the outcome of the procedure will vary.
Please note that these facts are general in nature, and specific details may vary based on individual circumstances. We encourage patients to have a detailed consultation with Dr. Tim to understand the procedure fully.
Risks of Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)
Every surgical procedure, including rhinoplasty, comes with inherent risks. Although complications are relatively rare and Dr. Tim or his team will take every precaution to minimise risks, it’s important to understand these potential complications to make an informed decision. Here are some of the potential risks associated with a rhinoplasty:
Bleeding: There’s a risk of minor bleeding following the surgery, but significant bleeding is unusual. If you experience prolonged bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.
Infection: While uncommon, there’s a small chance of developing an infection post-surgery. If this happens, it is usually treatable with antibiotics.
Difficulty Breathing: Some people may experience difficulty breathing through their nose after surgery. This is usually temporary but may be long-term in some cases.
Asymmetry: While Dr. Tim strives for perfect symmetry, the human face is naturally asymmetrical, and there may be slight differences in the shape and structure of your nostrils or nasal bones.
Scarring: Rhinoplasty typically results in inconspicuous scars. However, in some cases, healing skin can leave visible scars that might require further treatment.
Anaesthetic Risks: As with any procedure that involves anaesthesia, there is always a small risk associated with this aspect of the operation. This can include nausea, vomiting, and in rare cases, more serious complications.
Dr. Tim or a member of his team will discuss all these potential risks during your consultation so you can make an informed decision about your surgery. Dr. Tim will also go over your medical history and discuss strategies to minimise potential complications.
Recovery from Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)
Directly After Surgery
Following the procedure, your nose may be placed in a splint. This helps to support the new shape of the nose as it heals. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints also might be placed in your nostrils to stabilise the septum.
It’s normal to experience swelling and some bruising around the eyes after surgery that will begin to improve after the third day. Most people feel ready to go out in public and back to work in about 1-2 weeks. Cold compresses often help reduce the bruising and discomfort.
Weeks Following Surgery
In the first few weeks after surgery, you’ll need to avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. It’s also advised to avoid blowing your nose, excessive chewing, any clothes that need to be pulled over the head, and any extreme facial expressions.
The majority of swelling should resolve within a few weeks, but some minor swelling — (usually unnoticeable to anyone but you and Dr. Tim) — can remain for several months.
Long-Term Recovery
While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome.
It’s important to protect your skin from the sun while your nose is healing. Too much sun may cause permanent irregular discoloration in your nose’s skin.
Post-operative visits with Dr. Tim will be scheduled to monitor your progress. These follow-ups are a key part of your recovery and ensure that you are healing as expected.
Every patient’s recovery process is unique, so it’s important to follow all postoperative instructions provided by Dr. Tim or his team. This includes information about wearing compression garments, care of your drains, taking an antibiotic if prescribed, and the level and type of activity that is safe. Your team will also provide detailed instructions about the normal symptoms and how to spot any signs of complications.
